Construction, real estate, engineering, and architecture employ millions of people who design and build real things that real communities depend on. We believe AI is going to change these industries whether anyone is ready or not. Our mission is to make sure that this rapid change benefits both the people within these industries and the communities impacted by their projects.
These commitments are how we hold ourselves to that mission.
I. Workforce
We will not build or sell a tool whose intention is to eliminate labor. That is not the problem we are trying to solve. We will invest in training programs that help tradespeople and field workers understand and use AI tools, because access to this technology should not stop at the project manager level. Twice a year we will look honestly at who our products are actually helping and publish what we find. If the answer is mostly executives and not the people doing the work, that is a problem we will work to fix.
II. Transparency
Our tools will always show their work. Any AI-generated recommendation will come with a confidence level and citation. We will not run demos that hide what the product cannot do. If our software plays a role in a consequential decision, the data behind that decision will be available to the people it affected. We are not going to be a company that hides behind an algorithm.
III. Safety
Any product we build that touches safety-critical information will be reviewed by a licensed professional engineer or construction manager before it goes to a client. We know our tools are not the final word on a job site, however, we recognize that there is an inherent level of trust for AI, especially as users become more familiar with it. As such, we will engineer effective human-in-the-loop systems to ensure that decisions relating to safety don't go without proper review.
IV. Data Sovereignty
Client/user data belongs to the client/user. We will not train on it without written consent. We will not sell it or license it in any form without an explicit opt-in. If a client wants their data deleted, it will be gone within 30 days, no questions asked.
V. Human Design
We are firm believers that buildings are an art. AI should make the process of building better. It should not make decisions about what gets built or what it looks like. Those choices belong to people. We will not build tools that generate building designs autonomously. When we build anything that touches the design process, we ask whether it gives designers more room to work or less. If it gives them less, we do not ship it. Buildings reflect the people and communities that created them. We think that is worth protecting.
